Tuesday, April 17th was Tax Day, the last day to legally file your taxes to avoid paying penalties. Last year over 5 million people in the United States chose to wait until the final day to file their taxes. With millions of people rushing to meet the deadline of 11:59 pm on the 17th, what does the IRS website do? It crashes of course! The page on the IRS website that allows taxpayers to make a payment directly was not working. When users clicked on “Make a payment” on the page redirects users to a page titled “unplannedOutagePage.” Direct pay is not the only way to make a payment on the IRS website, however, it was one of the only ways to make a payment without any added fees. Citizens were taking to the internet to say that Americans do not need to file taxes this year because of the website malfunction(s). This is NOT the case. The error notice was sure to state that “Note that your Tax Payment is due although IRS Direct Pay may not be available.”
Due to the issues, the IRS has extended the deadline until today (Wednesday, April 18th, 2018) at 11:59 pm.
